What to Look For in a Dating App Built for Asians

I started Krush because dating apps built for everyone rarely understand what it is like to date while living between cultures. But I want to write this as a checklist rather than a pitch, because the criteria hold regardless of which app you end up choosing — and if you apply them honestly, some will point away from us.

Start with what “built for” should mean

Almost every app now claims to serve some community. The distinction that matters is whether identity shapes the product or merely filters it.

Filtering means the app is generic and you can narrow results by ethnicity. Everything else — the profile fields, the matching logic, the conversation starters — was designed for a general audience. The filter is a checkbox on top.

Shaping means identity is in the substance of the product. Cultural background, languages, and heritage live in the profile itself, so they influence who you see and what a first message can be about. The difference shows up immediately in how much explaining you have to do.

Neither is dishonest. But they produce very different experiences, and marketing copy will not tell you which one you are getting. The profile fields will.

Does the profile carry culture, or just photos?

Look at what a profile can actually contain before you sign up. This is the single most informative check available.

If a profile is photos plus a short bio, you are going to be judged on photos and you will judge on photos. That is not a moral failing of the app; it is what the structure permits.

If a profile can hold cultural background, the languages you speak, your interests, your dating goals, and something about personality, then you are being evaluated on more than appearance — and so is everyone else. For people whose identity is layered, that matters. Being Korean-Australian, or Vietnamese and raised in Germany, or mixed heritage and fluent in three languages, is not a checkbox. It needs room.

Is dating intent visible?

You should be able to tell what someone is looking for before you invest two weeks in them.

Apps that hide intent produce a familiar failure: two people talk for a fortnight and discover they wanted different things entirely. Apps that show it let you skip that.

How does it handle distance?

This one separates apps that genuinely serve a global community from apps that serve a local one.

Diaspora dating often is not local. You might be in Toronto and open to meeting someone in Seoul, or in London with family in Manila and no intention of staying in Europe forever. If an app assumes everyone wants someone within fifteen kilometres, it will quietly hide the people you would most want to meet.

Which safety tools exist, and can you reach them?

Every app claims to take safety seriously. The useful question is what specifically exists and how many taps away it is.

The things worth confirming: is there photo verification, and is it clear what it does and does not prove? Can you report and block from a profile or a conversation without hunting through settings? Is reporting confidential? Is there moderation beyond user reports alone?

Be sceptical of apps promising more than any app can deliver. Verification can help show that a member resembles their photos. It does not prove who someone is, and no app can promise a community free of bad actors. An app that is honest about that limit is more trustworthy than one that is not. How does it make money?

Pricing model shapes behaviour more than people expect.

Subscription-only apps need you to keep subscribing, which is not automatically aligned with you meeting someone quickly. Apps offering one-time purchases as well as subscriptions suit people who date in bursts rather than continuously — you can pay for one thing in a month that matters and nothing the rest of the year.

Check what the free tier genuinely includes. On most apps, including ours, the core experience is free: building a profile, browsing recommendations, liking, matching, and starting conversations. Paid options generally add visibility or convenience rather than unlocking the basics. What to be wary of: any app where you cannot tell what is free until after you have built a profile.

What to ignore

A few things get weighted too heavily.

Total user numbers. What matters is people who fit you, in your area or the places you would consider. A large app with nobody relevant nearby is worse than a small one with a real local community.

Interface polish. Nice design is pleasant and tells you nothing about whether you will meet anyone.

Claims that cannot be checked. Success percentages, match statistics, and superlatives are marketing. Judge the structure of the product instead — it is visible, and it is honest by necessity.

Then just try it

The criteria narrow the field; they cannot decide for you. Spend two weeks actually using an app and pay attention to whether recommendations feel relevant, whether conversations start somewhere real, and whether you feel like yourself while using it.

That last one is not a soft consideration. If an app makes you feel like you are performing a version of yourself, it is the wrong app, however good the feature list looks.
